Based on the combination of scores, each resident is placed in a dependency category. It is this category that determines the INAMI funding allowance paid to the facility.
Independent
Le résident est indépendant ou faiblement dépendant : il se lave et s'habille seul.
Physical dependency
Dependent for washing and/or dressing.
Moderate dependency
Dependent for washing and dressing, as well as for moving around and/or using the toilet.
High dependency
Dependent for washing, dressing, moving around and using the toilet, as well as for continence and/or eating.
High dependency and dementia
Meets the criteria for category C, with additional disorientation in time and space.
Dementia
Disorientation in time and space (diagnosed dementia), regardless of the level of physical dependency.
Each activity of daily living is scored from 1 (independent) to 4 (fully dependent); disorientation in time and space from 1 to 5. A criterion counts as “dependent” from 3 upwards. The Ccoma category applies to coma situations.
From draft to health-insurer approval
Four validated steps, through to electronic submission to the health insurer.

What is the Katz scale?
It is the official Belgian tool that measures a resident's level of dependency through 6 activities of daily living and 2 psychological criteria. The result determines the dependency category and therefore the INAMI flat rate.
How is the dependency category calculated?
Resthome automatically calculates the category (O, A, B, C, Cd, D or Ccoma) from the combination of the 8 scores, in real time, with no manual calculation.
What is early renewal?

How is the assessment sent to the health insurer?
Once validated, the agreement request is sent electronically to the health insurer via eAgreement, in the same flow as billing.
What is the difference between categories O, A, B, C, Cd and D?
They reflect an increasing degree of dependency. O is an independent resident; A a dependency for washing and/or dressing; B adds moving around and/or the toilet; C adds continence and/or eating. Cd and D concern dementia (disorientation in time and space). The higher the category, the larger the INAMI allowance.
How is the Katz scale score calculated?
Each of the 6 activities of daily living is scored from 1 (fully independent) to 4 (fully dependent). Disorientation in time and space is scored from 1 to 5. A criterion is “dependent” from 3 upwards. The combination of these scores automatically determines the category.
How often must the Katz assessment be renewed?
The assessment is updated at every significant change in the resident's condition and according to regulatory deadlines. Resthome monitors these dates and alerts you before expiry to avoid any funding gap.
Who carries out the Katz assessment?
It is carried out by nursing staff, based on daily observation, then validated by the head nurse or coordinator. Resthome traces every step: draft, confirmation, validation.
